Every ID Tells a Story

Behind every ID is a journey: a story of resilience, compassion, and community.

At the Homeless ID Project, we see every day how a single document can open the door to stability, employment, housing, and hope.

These success stories highlight the incredible individuals who have taken that first step, and the partners, donors, and volunteers who make it possible. Together, we’re proving that help really does start here, and it starts with all of us.

Frank & Phillipe

In this video, Frank and Phillipe share how obtaining a birth certificate was a vital first step that allowed them to exit homelessness and rebuild their life.  For thousands of people experiencing homelessness, the first step toward rebuilding their lives is something most of us take for granted — an ID or Birth Certificate.  Without an ID, you can’t get a job, rent an apartment, or even access critical services.

Yvonne

In just five months, Yvonne went from navigating legal barriers and homelessness to holding two jobs, moving into her own apartment, and preparing to reunite with her daughter. Her journey is a powerful example of what’s possible with community, compassion, and the right support system. Thanks to Melanie at the Keys to Change Justice Opioid Program, the Homeless ID Project, and Tyler at St. Vincent de Paul’s Workforce Opportunities Program, Yvonne now has stability, purpose—and hope for the future.

Damara & Chris

Damara and Chris have been together for four years. Together, they have four children. They both lost their AZ ID’s and could not afford to get them replaced.  We provided vouchers to both of them in December, allowing Chris to find employment as a day laborer right now. They are currently staying in a shelter at UMOM, but plan to find permanent housing once Chris finds more steady employment. Fortunately, he already has an interview set up! Damara and Chris applied for their birth certificates and their children’s, which will help with their housing options.  Damara said, “You guys helped us a lot!”.

Client and employee displaying a birth certificate and social security card obtained thru the help of Justa Center and Homeless ID Project

Jon

John didn’t even have a first name listed on his 1950s birth certificate – but that didn’t stop him! 😮 Our gem of a program specialists spent over a year helping him navigate the process. With support from our friends at Justa Center, John got his Social Security card, then we helped him amend his birth certificate and secure his Arizona ID. We’re safely holding his documents until he leaves respite and moves into his own home. 🏡✨ His optimism never wavered – and we’re so proud to support him every step of the way.
